Slow Food – Origins of the Movement

The Slow Food (Caps on the S and F) movement started in Italy.   While the experience of eating locally/ fewer miles between harvest and plate has always been a part of the food traditions all over the Italian peninsula, the actual Organization known as Slow Food began in 1986.   It was a movement away from the ever-growing fast food sectors, articulated in the three fundamental qualities of Slow Food.

  • GOOD: quality, flavorsome and healthy food
  • CLEAN: production that does not harm the environment
  • FAIR: accessible prices for consumers and fair conditions and pay for producers

They created a manifesto, which elaborates on the principles of good, clean and fairly produced food, produced and consumed in ways that are also grounded in the principles of social justice.

Today there are Slow Food organizations worldwide, in 150 countries.
